One thing I’m always looking to do is upgrade from capable to quality. Especially when it comes to classic items that never go out of style. One of these items I’ve been looking at lately is the weekender bag.
A weekender bag is a piece of luggage that can hold enough essentials for a weekend… think a couple of shirts, pants and toiletries. It’s for times when a backpack is too small and a suitcase is too large.
You probably already have a bag that you use in that way. My current one is an old duffel with the Molson Canadian logo on the side (a canadian beer company ).
Is it capable? Yes. Is it quality? No. The fabric gets bunched up on the zipper and the corners have holes.
So the quest to find a bag that is functional, built to last and stylish has led me to what I think are some of the best on the web:
Velomacchi Speedway Hybrid Duffle Pack
Velomacchi is a relatively new brand that has made a big impact on the motorcycle scene with their well thought out, sleek, technical packs and their duffle is no exception. Watertight, it’s able to be carried as a duffle, backpack or shoulder pack and has been designed with an interchangeable travel harness that tucks away as well as a self tailing cam buckle compression to securely transport on your motorcycle (or maybe on the back of a classic convertible?) without any flapping straps at high speed.

Defy R&R Weekender
For those who want a bag they can rely on in case of a zombie apocalypse, the R&R Weekender by Defy is one of the toughest bags you can own. Inspired by Israeli Defense Force standard issue duffles, this bag doesn’t cut any corners when it comes to durability. Industrial grade over sized YYK aquagard zippers, military-spec webbing quick grab handles and an extremely rugged 20 oz truck tarpaulin exterior, all adding to it’s reliability and it’s aesthetics.

Patagonia Black Hole Duffel Bag
The “Black Hole” duffel bag is perfect for those weekend camping trips. It is made from a burly polyester ripstop with highly waterproof laminate and a durable water repellent finish. With this being Patagonia you can feel good about purchasing this bag too as it has their “Bluesign” approved fabric stamp meaning it offers the highest level of consumer safety by employing methods and materials in their manufacture that conserve resources and minimize impacts on people and the environment.

Mystery Ranch Mission Duffel Bag
Mystery Ranch is a brand that’s been around since 2000, but you’d think by their loyal fan-base that it’s been around for 100 years. Trusted by the military and wild land firefighters Mystery Ranch’s packs have been put through some serious situations. Coming in three different sizes the Mission Duffel with it’s waterproofing and YYK zippers has a horseshoe opening making it extremely easy to pack and lay flat.

Mission Workshop The Transit Duffel
The transit duffel is designed for those quick getaways and with it’s waterproofing, 500d cordura nylon and multiple carry options it looks like the kind of bag you’ll come up with trips just to take it. Triple Aught Design Meridian
Triple Aught Design or “TAD” is a shorthand used by engineers and machinists for a thousandth of an inch – a high standard of precision for over a century. With a company named after such it’s no wonder the Meridian has so many technical, precise and well thought out design ideas. Expandable and organizational options come from their “Helix” attachment system which allows for sensitive items like photography or computer equipment to be stored in transport cubes and secured safely.

WP Standard The Military Duffel
Inspired by the top load duffel bags used by servicemen in the Vietnam war this 100% vegetable tanned leather duffle will age beautifully with time. The over-sized, adjustable and padded shoulder strap fastens at the top with a brass clasp. With a nice exterior pocket and a thick handle for versatility this bag was built to last.
